Message from the President

Dear Newcomers,

Well, another month has passed and it still amazes me how quickly time flies! (A common subject for my messages!) It seems like yesterday I was pulling weeds in my garden, so I could plant the summer annuals. Now, I feel a touch of autumn (Also a common subject!) in the air and know that soon the snowflakes will be blowing in the cold frosty air. It is time to tuck those tender leaves under a layer of mulch to protect them from the harsh winter. With the cooler temperatures comes the need for a cozy place in which to settle ourselves as well....a place that screams warmth and comfort. I like the idea that we all have a hearth, glowing and shimmering, that emits the dreamy scent of wood smoke and the sensation of being enveloped by our mother’s embrace. I like the idea that this can be shared. I like the idea that this is real. I like the idea that this is what Newcomers’ Club represents. That place where each of us feels embraced!

Our Club is two months into its new season and already we have had two successful social meetings, some lunches out, some walkings in. We've had a great Games Night, lots of quilting and such at Crafts and some really great golf games. We've had a bit of pot luck, a taste of genetic globalization at Book Notes, and a tasty-talky Hi Tea! There's Bible Study and so much to offer through Community Volunteers and the Garden Gals as well.

There is so much to "do" that we need not ever brood about being new and bored! Join an activity as soon as possible and feel the warm fuzzy feeling spread through your veins. Be sure to come to Jaime's for the next Monthly Social. Eric White, decorator extraordinaire, from Beyond Design, will give us a demonstration on gift-wrapping and hostess gift ideas for the holiday season. He promises lots of door prizes and tickets for sale to the Festival of Trees Fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. And Jaime's home is exactly that cozy place I was describing earlier! Details below!

We offer a BIG HELLO to our newest Newcomers. It was so good to meet you all at the last Social. Call on any member if you need help getting to know the city. We are here for each other. We are here for YOU! In closing, might I remind all our members that the Executive tries to provide each of you with a fun, informative and yes, a "warm" place to meet friends and experience all the wonderful things of St. John's, but we need input from you all, and patience as well. We are only volunteers and do make mistakes. If you would like to become part of the executive, just say the word and you can join a committee on the spot! We can always use help proofing printed materials, taking them to various businesses in town, letting our husbands'/partners' businesses know what we offer, and of course, greeting each other with a smile. See you all soon.
