March 2010

St. Patrick’s Day Potluck Luncheon
Wednesday, March 17th, 11:30 a.m.

This month’s social is taking place at the home of the club’s president Michelle in down town St. John’s. All participants are asked to feel adventurous and google all recipe sites on the web, so that they feel inspired and encouraged to prepare Irish dishes. Cook green, drink green, wear green, you are only limited by your own imagination. Parking is at a premium so car pooling would be a good idea.

ACTIVITIES

Morning Coffee at The Rooms

Wednesday March 3rd and (EDIT not 27th but:) 24th at 10:15 am

Our coffee mornings are well attended, with new arrivals appearing regularly. Due to our rather busy lives, some of us cannot participate as often as we would like to. If there are newcomers whose Wednesday mornings are not free, perhaps they will be free for lunch instead. Lunch could take place on alternate days, once or twice a month depending on interest. The Signal will publish any requests received prior to the deadline. To check or arrange a lunch date, call Hana.

Book Notes

Tuesday, March 16th at 1:00 PM at Pam’s.

Our March selection is What They Wanted by Donna Morrissey.

Our February meeting hosted by Michelle was well attended. Many thanks to her for hosting. Marina Endicott’s Good to a Fault received an overall rating of 7.8 out of 10.

The book was well written, and the storyline encouraged reflection on Clary’s “goodness”. Was she good, too good, selfish, selfless, using or being used? We decided she was a little bit of all those things. Taking in the family of strangers definitely filled a void in Clary’s life, while Lorraine and her children needed the care and compassion Clary offered. It ended up being a give and take relationship mutually beneficial. The characters were quirky, but believable, and deceptively straightforward storyline contained some unpredictable twists. All readers recommend this novel.

For the evening book club plans call Trudy.

Our growing group of readers would like to thank Andrea for convening the book club for more years than most of us have been members. We will definitely continue with the enjoyable December lunches and June book exchange and hope she will join us for more spirited discussion. The reading list and venues of future meetings are always published in The Signal. Further information is available from Hana at 738-0266.
