November Social with Decorator Eric White

Despite an exam in the afternoon and several projects cooking, Jamie held her cool and opened her wonderful home to the Newcomers' Club members for the November Social with decorator Eric White from Beyond Design.
The meeting was very well attended.
These ladies are busy browsing the book table and signing up for the event.
The rapt audience listens and watches as Eric demonstrated how to make beautiful stocking stuffers or hostess gifts as well as demonstrating the the art of gift wrapping.
He brought a little Christmas tree along to show how one can work with very few materials and colours to establish a theme and then use that as a pattern to be repeated all over the tree. His assistant Ambrose then finished the tree decoration, while Eric shared a few little recipes with the group, like the Paprika/Cream-cheese apple with a cinammon bark twig and a bay leaf.

Eric even recited a couple of poems by a good friend of his and some of his own, which he hopes, will make it into a book next year.
At the end he was presented with a token of appreciation and vowed to make certain the Newcomers would be invited to his Christmas event/fundraiser at the Fairmont next year.

Community Volunteers

The Community Volunteers met yesterday at June's place to put the gift bags together for the Naomi Center Christmas Party. June writes:

The group made some beautiful scarfs and potpourri sachets to put in the bags and as well we had pens donated by a member. We added a notebook and Christmas chocolate to finish them off. Ann decorated the bags and did a beautiful job.

Get Together Crafts

The ladies from the Get Together Crafts Group took on the group project of quilting this beautiful quilt in order to donate it to the Cancer Society's Festival of Trees.

Here you see the ladies at work:

Well informed rumour has it, that Eric White was so thrilled with the quilt, that he intended to decorate a Christmas tree at the Festival of Trees in the quilt's theme and even write a poem.

So, go see for yourself! The quilt and all the Christmas trees and crafts are on display at the Delta.

Message from the President

Dear Newcomers,

Well, another month has passed and it still amazes me how quickly time flies! (A common subject for my messages!) It seems like yesterday I was pulling weeds in my garden, so I could plant the summer annuals. Now, I feel a touch of autumn (Also a common subject!) in the air and know that soon the snowflakes will be blowing in the cold frosty air. It is time to tuck those tender leaves under a layer of mulch to protect them from the harsh winter. With the cooler temperatures comes the need for a cozy place in which to settle ourselves as well....a place that screams warmth and comfort. I like the idea that we all have a hearth, glowing and shimmering, that emits the dreamy scent of wood smoke and the sensation of being enveloped by our mother’s embrace. I like the idea that this can be shared. I like the idea that this is real. I like the idea that this is what Newcomers’ Club represents. That place where each of us feels embraced!

Our Club is two months into its new season and already we have had two successful social meetings, some lunches out, some walkings in. We've had a great Games Night, lots of quilting and such at Crafts and some really great golf games. We've had a bit of pot luck, a taste of genetic globalization at Book Notes, and a tasty-talky Hi Tea! There's Bible Study and so much to offer through Community Volunteers and the Garden Gals as well.

There is so much to "do" that we need not ever brood about being new and bored! Join an activity as soon as possible and feel the warm fuzzy feeling spread through your veins. Be sure to come to Jaime's for the next Monthly Social. Eric White, decorator extraordinaire, from Beyond Design, will give us a demonstration on gift-wrapping and hostess gift ideas for the holiday season. He promises lots of door prizes and tickets for sale to the Festival of Trees Fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. And Jaime's home is exactly that cozy place I was describing earlier! Details below!

We offer a BIG HELLO to our newest Newcomers. It was so good to meet you all at the last Social. Call on any member if you need help getting to know the city. We are here for each other. We are here for YOU! In closing, might I remind all our members that the Executive tries to provide each of you with a fun, informative and yes, a "warm" place to meet friends and experience all the wonderful things of St. John's, but we need input from you all, and patience as well. We are only volunteers and do make mistakes. If you would like to become part of the executive, just say the word and you can join a committee on the spot! We can always use help proofing printed materials, taking them to various businesses in town, letting our husbands'/partners' businesses know what we offer, and of course, greeting each other with a smile. See you all soon.

Peggy T.

Message from the 2nd Vice-President

I hope by now you have all signed up for at least a few interest groups. If you haven’t had a chance yet, remember it is never too late! Keep in mind that the winters here can be rather long and cold and it really helps to spend it with friends. Mary-Ellen

November Social

The November Monthly Social will be held on November 28 at the down-town Home of Jaime . Please join us for an artful demonstration by St. John's own designer guy, Eric White of Beyond Design. He'll show us all how to wrap our gifts in the latest glam techniques, how to select and wrap hostess gifts, as well as host some drawings for pretty items from his shop! He'll also give us some info about the Festival of Trees, whose trees will be on display at the Delta Hotel downtown.

Don't miss this opportunity to meet your Newcomer friends, have a sip of tea, and indulge in a bit of Holiday spirit. It is always a treat to meet in Jaime's lovely antique home. Remember all our meetings are 5 dollars cash at the door! Parking across the street next to Bannerman Park. Please RSVP to Jaime

Festival of Trees

The Festival of Trees and Holiday Gifts Extravaganza will celebrate their 10th anniversary on Thursday, December 1, in the Delta Hotel Ballroom. This year's event plans to be the most exciting evening ever! The event, with many local sponsors, is held each year as a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. The tickets cost 100 dollars a plate, and include a fantastic gala dinner, opportunities to purchase live and silent auction items, and this year will have many chances for raffle prizes. The dinner is tax deductible ($50), and the event is always filled with entertainment and surprises galore. Join your friends for the evening and celebrate with the Festival sponsors for a good cause! Trees go on display in November, so go have a taste of Christmas a month early! We try to help the committee by selling raffle tickets at the Delta as well as filling a table. Call Ann or Jaime of Community Volunteers if you'd like to help out! Or call the Festival of Trees committee contact June,if you would like more details.
